How to Properly Care For Your Golf Course Turf Equipment
editNo matter the equipment that you depend on to keep your golf course looking healthy and beautiful all year long, properly caring for your golf course turf equipment is key to helping it work at its peak capabilities. From mowers to utility vehicles and everything in between, consistent maintenance helps you keep up with the demands of your golf course.
In the latest blog post from Kenney Machinery, we’ll provide some tips to help you properly care for your golf course turf equipment.
Replace Oil
From trimmers to mowers, your golf course equipment likely has oil that must be replaced regularly. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need to replace oil roughly every 50 hours of use. Be sure to consult your equipment’s owner’s manual to find out how to change the oil, as well as what the proper type of oil is for your piece of equipment.
If the machinery hasn’t been used in a while, the oil might be old and contaminated. It’s a good idea to replace any oil that has been sitting in the equipment for months on end.
Replacing the oil at the appropriate time can help your machinery run well, as well as prevent issues from occurring.
Clean Under the Unit
Mowers in particular can have grass and debris built up under the unit after use. Too much build up can cause performance issues and even present the mower from starting. After every couple of uses, or after one prolonged session, be sure to inspect the equipment’s undercarriage. Be sure to clear out any grass or debris build up before the next mowing session.
Sharpen the Blades
For reel mowers, greens mowers, fairway mowers, and all other types of mowers, you’ll only be as successful as your mower’s blade allows you to be. That’s why it’s important to sharpen the unit’s blade regularly. Rocks, tree branches, and even grass itself can eventually wear blades down, requiring that you sharpen them in order to improve the quality of cut. Be sure to sharpen your mowers’ blades roughly every 25 hours of use to see the best results.
Monitor the Engine Air Filter
Utility vehicles, mowers, and other types of equipment utilize air filters to protect the equipment from dirt and debris. Over time, these filters will become clogged and need to be replaced. If it’s been a while since you changed your equipment’s air filters, be sure to check on their current statuses. Replace them if needed.
Swap Spark Plugs
Spark plugs play a crucial role in your machinery. They provide the spark that allows your equipment to start. The more that you use your equipment, the more frequently the spark plugs should be replaced. Each piece of equipment will come with separate recommendations on how often to replace your spark plugs, so consult with your owner’s manual before replacing any spark plugs.
Check Tires
If your equipment has been in storage for a while, the tires have likely deflated at least a little bit. However, just a few drops in PSI can make quite a difference in performance. Use a pressure gauge to determine the wheels’ current state of pressure. Then, consult your owner’s manual to discover what the ideal pressure range is for your equipment’s tires. You can then inflate your tires to the ideal range to reach maximum performance.
