Kenney Machinery Announces New Partnership with Prime Turf

For over a century, Kenney Machinery has been serving the Midwest (and now Florida) as the ultimate resource for turf professionals. Now, Kenney Machinery is proud to announce their new partnership with Prime Turf, a company offering innovative solutions for turf water treatment.

About Prime Turf

After decades as the superintendent of the Old Oak Country Club in Homer Glen, Illinois, Pete Lieponis was very familiar with irrigation water quality issues. Becoming increasingly frustrated with turf grass issues, Pete arranged for a consultant from Brookside Laboratories to test the quality of his irrigation water. Much to his amazement, he learned that the water’s pH was 8.0, with bicarbonates in the range of 525ppm.

Pete’s next steps were revolutionary: he chose to treat the water. Strangely enough, this was rarely done in the Midwest as it was assumed that the water was of good quality. Pete’s consultant from Brookside recommended that he start with a product called pHairway, which could take in hand the dissolved salts and bicarbonates that can badly damage turf. When Pete began using the product at Old Oak, he was shocked by the immediate positive results. Localized dry spots were gone, the turf greened, and areas that had been affected by stress were rapidly recovering. The turf’s overall condition was improved. Pete was able to reduce the amount of fertilizer and wetting agents as he continued to use the product over time, and golfers commented on the turf’s improvement as well.

Prime TurfPete expanded the delivery of pHairway to other clubs in the Chicago area and eventually started Prime Turf. This helped him to branch into chemical injection and Fertigation control stations, developing patented equipment and proprietary technologies that service turf around the globe.

What is Fertigation?

Fertigation, or the act of introducing nutrients via the golf irrigation system, can be accomplished in several ways. These include the following:

  • Injecting liquid fertilizers or nutrients proportionally through irrigation mainlines.
  • Covering all areas with a blanket of nutrient-enriched water.
  • When the turf is under a great deal of environmental stress, apply small amounts of nutrients frequently.
  • Repairing damage to young plants by spreader units through strategic application of fertilizers to new growth.

Fertigation stations are simple to use and can apply plant-nutrients with ease, enhancing the efficiency of nutrient uptake for turf as well as ornamentals. If you find that your turf suffers from intensive maintenance regimes, Fertigation is an excellent solution.

Prime Turf’s RENEW Water Treatment Amendment

RENEW, Prime Turf’s water treatment amendment, aids in the control of destructive dissolved bicarbonates and salts that harm your turf through decreased alkalinity. RENEW’s unique formulation of the non-hazardous compound Monocarbamide dihydrogen sulfate (MCDS) will improve your turf’s water penetration.

Most irrigation water has dissolved salts within it. While some are beneficial such as magnesium, sulfate, nitrate, and calcium, others such as chloride, sodium, and boron are detrimental to your turf. When these damaging salts are present in your water and soil not only will it damage your soil structure, but it can potentially harm your irrigation equipment, too.

RENEW treatment will lower your water’s pH, reducing the damage caused by water containing bicarbonate. The treatment will add a safe complex acid that will enable you to use acid in your turf applications without harming your personnel.
